Fred Gibson
All Ford fans will remember the name Fred Gibson with great reverie and pride. He was the man, with Harry Firth, who gave the Falcon its first victory in the Bathurst 500 in 1976, marking the very early beginnings of Ford's ongoing successes.
Gibson stayed with the Blue Oval for another six years and helped Howard Marsden claim two manufacturer's championships before Ford left motor racing for a period. It was the he joined Nissan as a driver and subsequent team owner. He helped Mark Skaife through 1990, 1991 and 1992, including wins on the mountain in 1991 and 1992. He then helped Skaife to championship victory in 1994 with Gibson Motorsport before another short time away from the category. Gibson didn't stay away for too long. He returned to be instrumental in the 1999 Bathurst victory of Greg Murphy and Steven Richards before again establishing his own team. |
