JUST GIVE ME A FAIR GO" SAYS JACK DANIEL'S RACING'S TODD KELLY
Jack Daniel's Racing star Todd Kelly just wants to stay out trouble and bank some points at this weekend's seventh round of the V8 Supercar Championship series at Queensland Raceway.
His Jack Daniel's Old No.7 Brand black-and-white Commodore has shown encouraging pace most of this season season - fifth placing for the weekend at the season-opening Clipsal 500 and a spectacular charge a few weeks ago in Darwin from the rear of the grid to 11th in Race 3 have been highlights - but it's the disappointments in between that Kelly desperately wants to put behind him.
"I just want to go to Queensland and concentrate on having a clean weekend," he said. "From the start of this year, other than Clipsal, I have not got through one round without drama.
"There's been times when there's been a fair bit of potential for a decent result so I'd just like to get through the weekend and try to finish all three races without any issues and try to get some points.
"For the year we've had, we should be 20th in the championship. Somehow we're 10th, so we just need to get a weekend under our belt where we get some good points, so that's what we're going to be focused on. Try and qualify well and finish all three races well."
He described some of this season's disappointments as "silly little things that can easily happen to anyone, but it's just been one after the other".
"In New Zealand the exhaust system fell off when we were in a good position, and in Perth we had two separate electrical issues, and then in Darwin we got squashed between two cars and busted the steering," he said.
Teammate Shane Price sits 26th in championship standings and said while he was still learning and making mistakes in his second season driving in the main series, he was pleased with the performance of a new-spec car and was looking forward to this weekend.
"I'm excited about Queensland Raceway - I know the track well, raced there a couple times and have done ok," he said.
"The new spec car is definitely different to what I've been used to. With Darwin under my belt and using Todd's experience as much as I can, I think we can definitely produce a good result in Queensland and I'm certainly aiming for that."
Kelly said the track condition was a big question mark after resurfacing work, and that his Jack Daniel's Racing crew would need to work quickly to come to terms with it when practice kicks off on Friday. "It depends whether it's got more grip than last year or not," he said.
"If it's got more, with our car, that should be a good thing. As soon as we drive on the track and figure out what it (surface condition) is, we'll adapt pretty quickly to it."
